Characterizing Great Lakes HABs Toxicity and Management Implications

This study will provide the science and data needed to better understand and predict the toxicity of cHABs in the Great Lakes. This information is needed by decision makers to help inform long-term management strategies for cHAB toxins in addition to, and in concert with, current strategies for biomass reduction.  Furthermore, the work will help address Annex 4 lake ecosystem objective to ‘maintain cyanobacteria at levels that do not produce concentrations of toxins that pose a threat to human or ecosystem health’. Without this basic understanding of toxicity in cHABs in the Great Lakes, it will be difficult if not impossible to determine if current strategies will ultimately lead to the desired ecosystem responses.
